Logos makes it as simple as typing in a keyword or clicking a Scripture verse. Within seconds it will search an entire library, organize the results, and show the best ones; one more click will begin a deeper search. Logos also makes it easy to do word studies and to find basic or advanced information about the original Greek and Hebrew. It allows notes and easily formats footnotes. It is rich in features that display the unique strengths of software. Over the last few years Logos has begun extending Logos to be more than a research library.
Recently, for example, they added Logos Mobile Ed—video-based courses taught by prominent theologians. These courses were created specifically by and for Logos and feature the teacher looking straight into the camera, making them very natural and intimate. The ability to take courses through Logos—to watch the lectures, read the books, and take notes all within the system—adds a lot of value to the software. Logos offers many different forms of training—major conferences often have a Logos-sponsored breakout session, you can take the Logos Mobile Ed course, or watch online video tutorials.
From personal experience I can say that you will use Logos better, and alleviate some of your frustrations, if you learn how to use it better. I often see Logos at major conferences advertising as software that may appeal to the casual Bible reader.
I would urge people to be very cautious before making a significant investment. It is a useful aid in Bible study, but is very unlikely to be the key that unlocks new spiritual depths. While it is certainly useful for any Christian, the greatest value is for those who have to do the greatest amount of Bible study and who can purchase the greatest number of resources for it.
At the very least, give it a good test-drive before making the financial investment. Logos Needs Resources Logos cannot be better than the resources it contains. Your experience of Logos will vary proportionally with the resources you purchase for it. In other words, if you want to get a lot out of Logos, be prepared to spend a lot on it. That needs some nuance: adding good resources increases the power of the system. Adding junk will not do you any good.
This means that as you grow a Logos library, you need to emphasize quality over quantity, and ultimately aim for quantity of quality. Some of those resources are excellent and ones you will use regularly; others are not. Instead of spending extra up-front to buy a massive quantity of resources you may never use, consider spending less up front and then concentrating on purchasing resources you know you will use.
After all, one great commentary on Ephesians will be far more valuable than the three mediocre ones that will come with your base package. You May Not Save Money We tend to believe that digital resources are necessarily less expensive than printed resources, but this is not always the case, and especially so where there is little price competition. The disparity opens up all the more if we account for used or imperfect editions of the printed books.
Do note that Logos now has some resources available for rent, so for a few dollars per month you can access a book you do not wish to purchase. Note: Some of the following concerns have been improved in recent versions of the software.
Logos is a combination of hardware and software. And, at least on a Mac, Logos demands a lot from the hardware. For some reason Logos regularly seems to need more power than my computer, a latest-generation iMac, is willing or able to give it.
Here is a typical sequence of events: Last week I began to prepare a sermon and noted that it had been a couple of weeks since I last opened Logos on that computer. Might there be one that does? To me the most beneficial tool is one I used for years since it first came out in but is not published anymore-The New Treasury of Scripture Knowledge. You can buy a used copy but having it on Logos helps a lot!

It is straightforward. But when I turn on my Logos visual filter. I see something entirely different. But wait … it gets even better. It was easy to turn on—just a few clicks: But just like that, you can tell Logos to catch key related words that would otherwise slip right past you!
Logos shows you how the New Testament uses the Old Testament A cheer went up from all Logos users when this new feature was announced. Isaiah, in this case. Logos shows how any word is used across the whole Bible. It lets me search the Bible for any Greek or Hebrew word, which is super helpful. You can run a background check on any Bible character. The Bible Factbook really gives me a hand. But not this time.
Enter the Bible Factbook. The next step would be to flip to the back of the book to find the corresponding number. There, I would find a quick, dictionary-type definition of the word. If I wanted to know more—and I always did— I would look up that word in Dr. Instead, I can turn on the Interlinear Ribbon, and all this information floats right below the Bible like so: Instant insight!
You can search the Bible by speaker in Logos Bible Software. You can search the Bible by sense in Logos Bible Software. This is also super, super exciting. Logos Bible Software gets us closer to the original settings. But in Logos, I can look up the passage and get a high-level idea of some ancient cultural concepts in this book of the Bible: As you can see, some of these are a lot more helpful than others. With Logos, you can easily visualize ancient units of measurement.

Overall, my caution has steadily decreased in time. But where I have held out is in moving beyond the free Logos package to a paid package that offers all the promised functionality the platform has to offer. To my great surprise, Logos kindly gave me a review copy of the Standard Logos 9 Gold package. After downloading everything, I watched a video by Morris Proctor explaining how to use some of the features.
It was amazing how his voice drew my three four kids down into the office. They watched the video with me for fun. As busy as any of us might be, it ultimately saves time to learn how to better harness the power of Logos instead of bumbling through haphazardly.
The biggest game changer for me is the passage guide. To my thinking, this makes a base package worth it. You will instantly have a well-stocked library connected with all the powerful linking and searching goodness this platform can provide. This tool not only saves time, but it brings data to your attention that you would probably miss otherwise.
By plugging that reference into the guide, Logos generates links to the specific location I need in all my commentaries, intentionally selected related passages, quick links to Bible Word Studies on key terms, relevant ancient literature, sermons others have preached on this passage Augustine of Hippo and John Piper , and even some recommended songs that might work well in a worship service with this text.
The Passage Guide is where I will go from now on once I translate and diagram my text.
