Thread starter Dragontamer Start date Jul 15, Note: Early September, this first post got screwed up somehow.
I worked again to restore the defense table and as of September 16, I've rewritten the entire first post. What is a Defense Tier? Quite simply, I've combined the HP and Defense score of every pokemon into a single number.
The higher the number, the stronger the pokemon is defensively. The weakest pokemon on this scale is Pichu at tier 98, and the strongest is Regirock at tier All other pokemon except Shedinja fall in this scale. In Special Defense, Magikarp is the weakest at tier 99, and Blissey is the strongest at A Defense Tier holds a lot of information, but the easiest way to use them is to just compare the two numbers.
The higher the number, the more defense that pokemon has. I'll talk about more advanced tricks later. How much Math do I need to know to use Defense Tiers? You only need to know addition and subtraction to do most advanced stuff with Defense Tiers. Just add and subtract. As for the level of math that was used to create the Defense Tier list, it is High School level math.
Again, you don't need to know logarithms to use this list. This way, you get the minimum and maximum scores for all pokemon in a single chart. However, there are many more EV Spreads than that. The easiest way to calculate a custom defense tier is to load the Shoddybattle Plugin into shoddybattle. Load it up in the "plugin" menu, and then click on "Calculate Defense Tier" and you've got it. For those who don't have Shoddybattle, the formula just requires High School math to understand.
In the event of a Critical Hit see below , A is doubled. However, an extremely important aspect of combat is that attacks like Meditate and Tail Whip can change the values of B and D , respectively, by increasing or decreasing the statistics of the combatants.
D is also subject to change through the use of Reflect and Light Screen. The effects and interactions of these and similar moves make for quite a long story, and are therefore addressed separately on the Statistic Modifiers page. This is simply the Power value reported in the Attacks Section for the physical or special attack being used. X is described above in the section on STAB: if the attacker's Type or at least one of them, for dual-Types is identical to the Type of the physical or special attack, X has a value of 1.
As explained on the Type Modifier Chart page, attacks that are super-effective against the current enemy's Type multiply damage by 2, while those that are not very effective multiply damage by 0. Attacks that are totally ineffective multiply damage by 0. If the enemy has two types, both are taken into account, and the multipliers for each Type are multiplied together.
Thus, the full range of possible Type Modifier values is as follows:. However, as you will note from the above statement of the BDF, the game code apparently multiplies these values by 10 in order to produce the Y variable which therefore has 40, 10, 5, 2.
It's not clear why the programmers chose to do this, but in any case it makes no difference, because the formula immediately divides the result by 10! If you wish, you can simplify the BDF for your own use and ignore this step.
If you choose to do this, Y will range from 4 to 0, and you won't have to divide by 10 at the next step. You can raise your Attack stat by a flat value using the Float Stone. Compare your damage before and after having the Float Stone equipped in Practice Mode using the dummy. If damge is increased, it scales with Attack.
If it does not, it scales with Special Attack. You can determine whether moves that target self scale on Special Attack by using Wise Glasses. For Eldegoss 's Synthesis move, you can find how much damage you recover at low health by the green number that pops up. Simply compare between with an item equipped and unequipped to see if its Attack or Sp. You can save a comment for later by giving it a Like.

Great examples are Karate Chop and Rock Slide, which both make a physical impact on the target. Special Attack, meanwhile, is left for elemental and magical attacks that are usually done from a distance.
These usually have to do with moves that control forces of nature, like Hydro Pump or Flamethrower, but also attacks that involve more mystical forces like Psybeam or Dark Pulse. If you find yourself unsure as to whether a certain move uses a Pokemon's Attack or Special Attack stat, look to the symbols for clarification. On the summary page for any given move in all applicable titles , there will be at least seven pieces of information; the move's name, the available Power Points PP for short; it's how many times the move may be used before replenishment is needed , the power level, the rate of accuracy, the typing, the description, and the category.
The category is the one we're looking for right now. If there is a symbol that resembles concentric ovals, like a slightly squished Target logo, then the move is categorized as a Special Attack. If there is a symbol that resembles a spiky explosion, like the action bubbles from old comics, then the move is categorized simply as an Attack. Two other stats go hand-in-hand with these offensive stats, and those are Defense and Special Defense.
Pokemon with high Defense are often physically sturdy and bulky to prevent damage from physical moves and are particularly common among rock-type and steel-type Pokemon like Onix and Steelix.
Pokemon with more mental fortitude, meanwhile, are typically going to have higher Special Defense, taking less damage from special moves. These are often Special Attack users themselves as well, such as Espeon and Alcremie. The iconic Lucario especially has a great combination of both Attack and Special Attack, meaning that if you train it right then you can safely teach it physical and special moves.
In the same way that some select Pokemon have great Attack and Special Attack stats mixed attackers , only a few equally excel in both Defense and Special Defense. Blissey, for instance, is an infamous special wall with an absurd base HP and Special Defense.
