This means, if your drive is not high enough to fill the entire hot swap bay, it may not line up correctly with the corresponding SATA connector at the back of the bay. As an additional complication, depending on the system, the hot-swap bay may need to be installed upside down. If a 7mm drive does not line up with the SATA connector in the hot swap bay, you can use a 2. The spacer is simply attached to the drive and makes the effective height of the drive 9.
If you look into the bay, you may see the internal SATA connector. At OnLogic, we add spacers to our 7mm drives to ensure proper fit in 9. Alternatively, you can purchase 9. This means the saved data is identical on both drives. Pairing this with a separate backup solution provides both high availability and high reliability. By utilizing a hot-swap system you can easily change out a drive should one fail or remove one of the drives without interrupting the data writing on the other drive.
In many manufacturing facilities, the most common point of hardware failure is hard drives. Without a hot-swap solution you lose hours of time when a hard drive fails because you have to remove the mounted system, send it to IT, wait for them to open it up, replace and test the hard drive, and reinstall the system. With a hot-swap bay you can keep multiple spare preconfigured hard drives on hand, and swap them out on the floor, saving your business an incredible amount of time and money.
Note: this blog was originally published on May 16, and was updated on September 27th, Hi Andy, thanks for your question. The only requirements for hard drives within a hot swap bay are the size and interface. If your hot swap bay is compatible with 2. Just make sure, as mentioned in point 1 above, that the height of the drive commonly called the z-height is compatible with your drive bay.
I am having trouble finding additional hard drives already in the sleds. Any suggestions. Hi James, thanks for reaching out.
Have you reached out to them directly tech glyphtech. If yes, then please tell me how? Hi Ginger! If you are an OnLogic customer, contact our support team at info onlogic. Can I use it in a hot swap? JaredDM Reputable. Jul 8, 2 5, The drive isn't the determining factor at all, it's the controller, motherboard, OS, etc.
Paul NZ Polypheme. Sep 15, 20, 3 61, 2, I think you have to install the right drivers , as well for it to support hotswap.
Jun 14, 13, 49, 1, What does WIKI say? I think lately, vendors is been using "hot swap" waaaaay too loosely. I've been looking at HD cages and they all boast hot swap capability, then folks who buy these cages go, my system is hot swappable!
Just because you can remove the drive wo opening the case doesn't mean you can do it while the power is on and the OS still running. RAID vendors too, waaay too loose. Don't tell me your rig is hot swappable unless I can change a failed drive without stopping or pausing while the stuff is being re-built.

It's probably just a matter of the format used by the vendor to list the specs. Both disks are "hot-swappable" as long as supported by your motherboard as the previous comments in this thread indicated. You must log in or register to reply here. Question M. Question How can I move all my data to a new Hard drive?
There was always lsass. I turned the power off on the eSATA caddy. Probably wishful thinking Media player: ik. In my experience if I add a sata drive to a running PC using AHCI it will show up in the safely remove list and allow me to remove it, but if I boot up with it conected it will not. Simply removing a SATA drive or turning it off without using some sort of safely remove tool runs the risk of corrupting data on the drive. You may be able to disable disk caching for the drive in question which would make it safe but also slow down performance, however this may also require AHCI.
Changing to AHCI on a boot disk will prevent widows from starting, there are ways around this however. If you cant do this you need to trick windows into installing the driver for AHCI which is harder. Replies: 18 Last Post: , PM.
